The Egyptian Museum located in Cairo was founded in 1857 by Auguste Mariette, a renamed Egyptologist. The Egyptian Museum houses more than 120,000 objects in all kinds of Ancient Egypt. These are oragnisés thematically or chronologically.

The aim of the Egyptian Museum was to stop the looting of archaeological sites Egyptians and expose to the public. The current museum, built in 1900 in neo-classical style by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon, is

 one of the most visited tourist attractions in Cairo.
